- Pearl S.Buck was the daughter of Absalom and Caroline Sydenstricker, Southern Presbyterian missionaries who were stationed in China.
- Pearl was actually born in Hillsboro, West Virginia
- When she turned three months old, she was taken to China.
- She was born in June 26, 1892 and she died March 6, 1973.
- China has too very different cultures: Traditional and Modern cultures.
- Before the 20th century, the traditional culture was based by living by traditional values and believing that the old teaching and ways of life were the only options.
- The modern Chinese culture was developed after the political change that occurred in 1949.
- Society is divided into two main parties: peasant masses, and the political leaders which are named the ganbu.
- Both classes are supposed to work together towards the unison for the common good.
- However, there exists a growing gap between the rich and the poor like in every country
- When Sai was only four years old she spoke and wrote Chinese as well as English.
- Sai attended Randolph Macon Women’s College in the United States from 1910 to 1914.
- There, she learned about feminist issues and published some undergraduate literature.
- Lived as a minority in a different country.
- In 1917 she married J. Lossing Buck.
- In 1920 a beautiful daughter was born with PKU and was diagnosed as mentally retarded.

- In 1921 her mother’s death was the inspiration that created her mother’s biography.
- In 1934 she completed her masters degree in English in Cornell University.
- She was friends with Eleonor Roosevelt.
- Pearl also taught English literature for some time at the University of Nanjing and the Chinese National University.
- She was “pictured on a 5 cent US definitive postage stamp which was issued June the 25th of 1983” (Conn, 2008).
